LSU Softball Goes Teal to Strikeout Ovarian Cancer

What no purple & gold? As much as we love the traditional colors of LSU it truly is fun to start from scratch with a new color palette. Deciding colors in our office is usually pretty simple. Purple, gold, white, black and any shade of grey in between as supportive colors. But when working with a new color we had to step back and take some time to pick the correct color teal. It was a back and forth process using Pantone swatch books and a little bit of trial and error.

Before the season began and a few short months after Beth Torina was named the head softball coach we met to discuss the 2012 softball campaign. One of the great surprises was a new branded game, "the teal game". Teal is used to represent ovarian cancer awareness like pink is used to represent breast cancer. For Coach Torina this was something special and had previously done while coaching at Florida International

Working with softball marketing director Lauren Taylor and our marketing director Mathew Shanklin we established the logo above with different color solutions, a shirt and most recently a Save the Date card designed by Courtney Wilburn for the April 21 game vs. Ole Miss in Tiger Park.

Helping Local Disabled Children, LSU Softball's "Geaux Play"

This year a new community service initiative was developed with our marketing office, LSU softball pitcher Brittany Mack and the LSU Softball team. We created a new logo, shirt, billboards, webpage, videos, posters and e-mails to promote the campaign. Here is an excerpt from the press release about "Geaux Play":

"Geaux Play" is an attempt to challenge the LSU Softball fan community to share the gift of sports with local special needs children. Brittany Mack, LOWE's Senior Class Award Candidate, has been working with the Miracle League for a couple years now and found a lack of equipment for these children.

Throughout the season, LSU Softball will collect new or gently used sports equipment, ranging from gloves, squishy bats, kick balls, softballs. All items collected will be given directly to the local schools Mack visits bi-weekly and the Miracle League athletes.

Mack visits with local East Baton Rouge physically disabled children weekly to share the gift of sport with them and the items collected throughout the season. The "Geaux Play" program will commence with the "Geaux Play" game on Sunday, April 22 as the Tigers take on Ole Miss.

Preserving LSU Football History One Pixel at a Time

While preparing photos for a project to honor LSU Football All-Americans outside of Tiger Stadium we realized we needed a larger version photo of 1951 All-American George Tarasovic. His image has been cut out and really small in the LSU Football Media Guide for years.

In the LSU Sports Information archive we have a folder for every athlete/coach/staff member. Usually it contains their student-athlete questionnaire, press clippings and photos. The photos come in all different formats many of which are different slides and negative formats.

Tarasovic's archive included only original 4 inch x 5 inch negatives. We scanned the film, inverted the image in Photoshop, adjusted the colors and then cleaned up using the clone stamp tool to remove years of scratches and grain. Above is the before and after of the clean up. Click the image for a more detailed view. Patience is needed for this process.

Tarasovic's image is one of many images that have been scanned from years past and now are part of our digital archive. The first year LSU Athletics shot photos digitally was in 2001. That means a large part of the 119 year history of LSU football is in older formats. Preserving these images is one of the many steps taken to continue the storied tradition of LSU.

LSU Baseball Bat Girls Logo Redesign

The LSU Baseball season starts February 17 against Air Force, but preparations have been well underway. One of the changes is a redesign to the LSU Bat Girls logo that will be used in 2012 and on the apparel they wear at games and other LSU Baseball events. Also attached is a look at some historic photos of the group and a comparison of the old and new logo. Tell us what you think?
